Santa Monica Wins Home Opener

Going into a home opener can be emotional and powerful. A new season is upon our players, expectations have been set, and the stakes are high, but Santa Monica College Men's Basketball team (2-6) remained poised and got the job done.

They beat LA Southwest College (2-4) on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, and were led in scoring by sophomore guard Joe Robinson, who finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three assist, and went 6-6 from the free throw line.

For LA Southwest, a dismal showing left little to shine light on, but their guard play shouldn't be overlooked. Kiza Sekiyoba and Deric Daniels combined for 26 points and both shot 50-percent from three point land - still not enough to beat the Corsairs.

For SMC, the ball bounced their way seemingly all game long. They trumped their season averages across the board. Santa Monica scored more points than usual due to everyone on the team scoring, which is widely considered a rarity in basketball. The team also grabbed more rebounds and tallied more assist in this game than their season averages suggest.

Santa Monica played a very well rounded game, Michael Fry and Daniel Estes combined for 11 blocks and 21 points.

Tyler Mclean was the epitome of unselfish as he had a double-double, scoring 13 points and chalking up 11 assist, not just getting it done on one side of the court - Mclean also raked in seven steals.

After getting a full team effort SMC will look to build on their home opening win and prepare for a road game against Ventura on Nov. 28.
