Corsairs Comeback Attempt Flocked by Seahawks

Just a few days removed after completing one of the most stunning comebacks in program history, the Santa Monica Corsairs Men's Basketball team fell short of duplicating that same result, as they fell at home against the Los Angeles Harbor Seahawks on Saturday, Dec. 3 2017, at the Pavilion in Santa Monica, Calif.

The game started off well for the Corsairs, as they opened up with a 20-12 lead in the opening minutes of the game. Soon after however, the Corsairs would crumble in a dramatic turn as soon, as L.A. Harbor went on to score 21 unanswered points and never looked back. The Seahawks continued to pour it on with a flurry of 3-pointers and connecting on open opportunities as the Corsairs had a complete meltdown on defense, and turned the ball over on numerous occasions. The half ended with L.A. Harbor taking a commanding 59-38 lead.

Corsairs Head Coach, Joshua Thomas, gave the Corsair News some insights on what went down in the first half. "We started off great and then next thing you know the other team started to make a run," Thomas said. "One of our weaknesses is when teams start to make a run against us, I think we kind of fold a little bit, or shy back, or lose a little bit of competitiveness and that happened, and the game got kind of outta hand really quickly."

While L.A. Harbor continued their momentum on the court for most of the second half, the Corsairs would not go down without a fight as they clawed their way back into the game on offensive execution and defensive contributions. The Corsairs were able to get back to within ten points within the final minutes of the game, but it was all that they could muster, as L.A. Harbor would hold on to win by a score of 106-92.

The Corsairs now fall to a record of 3-10 on the season. Joe Robinson had finished leading the team with 32 points on the floor before being fouled out of the game. When asked about what were the key moments of a near comeback, Robinson said, "I think we just need to have that mindset where we don't want to come back in the second half. We want to stay up the whole game and keep our foot on the other team's neck. So I think our mindset has to change."

This served as the final game of 2017 for the Corsairs, as they will have a week off before coming back to host Los Angeles Trade Tech on Jan. 5, 2018 at the Pavilion in Santa Monica, Calif. to begin the new year. When asked about what are the plans to prepare for the new year, Coach Thomas said, "We're just gonna go back to our fundamentals, effort, and teaching defense...it just goes down to defensive fundamentals and bringing the effort and energy based on the intensity, and also come together as a team. There's a lot that basically myself as a coach that I have to figure out, and I honestly I failed that as trying to make this team come together and that's my responsibility."
