Women’s soccer faced Citrus College for their penultimate conference game.
The Citrus College Owls hosted our Santa Monica College Corsairs women’s soccer thirteenth conference match. It took place at Citrus College Stadium in Azusa, California, on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Going in, the Corsairs sat second on the Western State Conference (WSC) South Division table, with only a few points behind first place. The Corsairs beat the Owls 2-1.
The Corsairs struggled to keep possession in the first half with a missed penalty kick. The Owls were also awarded a penalty kick, which keeper Maddy Morris took up in the 40th minute, giving them the lead.
In the second half, Corsair forward Amarah Martinez made the equalizer to bring the score to 1-1. Towards the end of the match, with 90 seconds left on the clock, the Corsairs were given a penalty kick, taken by Bella Velazco for the winning goal, and ending the match 2-1.
The Corsairs continue to hunt for first place, as they are now one point behind the current leader, the College of the Canyons Cougars. Currently, the Cougars sit at 33 points and the Corsairs at 32, meaning a win is crucial. The Corsairs’ next and last game of the season will also be against the Cougars on Friday, Nov. 10, at Canyons. The Corsairs’ last meet with them ended in a loss, but this time may be different as they are now battling for the WSC title.
