Women's soccer wins by scoring four goals in the second half.
On Friday, Oct. 27 at Corsair Field, the SMC Corsairs women’s soccer team faced off against the Bakersfield College Renegades. After a first half rimmed with close calls and no points scored by either team, the Corsairs made a turnabout victory in the eventful second half, winning 4-1.
In the first half, Corsair goalkeeper Jaylene Beatts successfully blocked off four near-goals by the Renegades. By intermission, the score remained at 0-0.
The game’s excitement heightened once the second half began. After a review of their strategy during halftime, the Corsairs’ got things going when forward Tia Lucas scored a goal in the 63rd minute. Over the next 15 minutes, the Corsairs scored three more goals. Five minutes after her first goal Lucas scored again.
Lia Agapitos and Mika Brenner finished off the scoring barrage, creating two unassisted goals in two minutes. With eight minutes to go, the Renegades finally scored a goal of their own, but it was too late for them. The game ended with a 4-1 Corsair win.
Head Coach Aaron Benditson shared that the success of the first goal contributed to how the team played the rest of the game. “It was one of those games that once we were to get a little bit of success, we felt that we were gonna be able to score quite a few goals and be able to open the score up, which we were able to do,” said Benditson.
Next game up is a spooky showdown at LA Valley College on Halloween day at 4 p.m.
