Proving Themselves Before the Playoffs

The Corsairs take on Antelope Valley in a thrilling soccer game.
On Friday, Nov. 3, the Santa Monica College women's soccer team played against the Antelope Valley College Marauders in the scorching-hot afternoon sun at Corsair Field. The heat didn’t seem to affect the Corsairs, though, and they squeaked through and won 2-1.
Forward Tia Lucas scored the first goal, curving the ball midair to confuse the goalie and sneak it through. The Marauders scored the second goal on a team penalty. The last goal was scored by Amarah Martinez with about 10 minutes left in the game.
“Yesterday, before our game, we had a few girls come out to work on our shooting. And that was literally the exact same rep that we were practicing, like cutting to your left and then putting it in,” Lucas said.
When asked about her thoughts for the rest of the season, she said, “I think this is one of the best teams I’ve ever been on and it’s, like, such a strong connection. And then, league-wise, we’re doing really good … I think we have a shot at winning if we put our head down.”
Overall, the team is 10-3-6 and currently on a five-game winning streak with two games left in the regular season, setting themselves up nicely for the playoffs.
