SMC Women’s Soccer loses second game
The Santa Monica College women’s soccer team fell 3-1 last Friday at East L.A. College.SMC head coach Aaron Benditson felt his team played well, but mentioned they needed better ball security. The Huskies took a quick 1-0 in the opening 15 minutes of match. Sophomore midfielder Gabby Rodriguez later tied the game for the Corsairs. With 15 minutes left in the first half, the Huskies broke the 1-1 tie on a shot that was deflected off of goalkeeper Alisa Sheldon’s right hand before hitting the back of the net. Down by one at the half, the Corsairs looked to equalize the match until a controversial out-of-bounds call gave the game’s momentum back to East LA. “I thought the officiating was inconsistent,” said Benditson. Shortly after the contentious call the Huskies scored their third and final goal. Hoping to add a spark to the Corsair, Meg Pierce and Sarah Barrington were subbed with 20 minutes remaining in the second half, but the Corsairs were still unable to decrease the deficit. Samantha Li stood out on defense by disturbing the passing lanes, while Rodriguez and sophomore forward Olivia Patterson led the offensive attack.
