SMC Job and Internship Fair

The time has arrived for students to present their resumes in this year’s Job and Internship Fair held by Santa Monica College’s Career Services Center on Tuesday, September 11. Companies from all sorts of fields will be present on campus filled with opportunities for students.

The event will commence Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in the main quad where students will be exposed to a variety of booths. Ann Marie Leahy, a Career Services Advisor, is excited about this year’s fair, she said: “This is the first time we will be hosting both the job fair and the internship fair together… Usually the job fair occurs during the fall and the internship fair during the spring.”

Leahy has made it her priority to fulfill students’ desires by bringing in a wide range of employers to this year’s fair. She was very excited last year, as were students, when Tesla showed up to the campus. Leahy urges students to submit any suggestions for other companies to the Careers Services Center in order to pursue those employers for future fairs. She stated that, “many employers decide to return because they just love our students so much.”

Second year psychology student, Carloroberto Escobar, is also excited for the event, he said: “I think it is very beneficial because many of us as students have economic difficulties when it comes to paying for books, utilities, and school in general. I would definitely recommend students to attend this event because of the wide range of opportunities that will be available to you.”

In past years, SMC students have found great success seeking jobs and internships through resources like the Job and Internship Fair. Leahy wants to make it clear to students that, “It is never too early to start… Networking is so important in college, it doesn’t matter if you don’t get the internship or job you want, starting off somewhere and meeting the right people can lead you to move up slowly.” The Career Services Center will have a booth in the fair to give students information to help them get started.

Prior to this event, however, the Career Services Center will also hold workshops to prepare students for their interviews. They are encouraging students to print out resumes and look presentable when the fair opens. Their website has established a form that students can fill out as they follow the steps to find success in their hunt.

For more information students can visit the SMC website, search for Career Services Center and access forms regarding preparation and more information about the job fair and a number to their offices.
