Corsair women’s soccer secures blowout win against West LA.
The Santa Monica College Corsairs women’s soccer team ran circles around the West Los Angeles College Cougars on Tuesday at Corsair Field, winning comfortably 6-0.
The Corsairs didn’t just win, they claimed their victory in a dominating fashion. The Cougars never got a chance to score, barely ever coming within striking range of the Corsairs’ goal.
Nearly the entire game was spent on the Cougars’ side of the field. Corsair goalkeepers Giorgia Sterza and Yahira Ruvalcaba spent most of their time directing the defenders and calling plays instead of diving to block shots.
One thing that made the Corsairs’ win so sweet was that all six of the goals were scored by different players, with goals scored by Amarah Martinez, Alinna Savaterre, Lia Agapitos, Carmen Talavera, Tia Lucas, and Alicia Edberg.
When asked about the defense, head coach Aaron Benditson said that defense was a high priority for the Corsairs. “If we don’t concede goals, we might not win every game, but we’ll never lose a game.” The strategy seems to work, since only six goals have been given up in the last ten games, and only one of those games was a loss.
The Corsairs will play their next game on Friday, Oct. 29, at Corsair Field, against Bakersfield.
