No Food for the Owls

Women’s volleyball beats Citrus College.
On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the Santa Monica College Corsairs women’s volleyball team played against the Citrus College Owls at Corsair Gym. The Corsairs won 3-0.
On paper, the Corsairs seemed to have the advantage with a 15-6 record for the season over the 5-17 Owls. But the first set wasn’t so easy for them, as they struggled to find their groove.
Despite the mismatch, both teams remained locked in evenly throughout the set, trading service and attack errors back-and-forth with each other. Interestingly, most of the Owls’ points came from Corsair errors, as the Corsairs had more than double the kills with 13 than the Owls six. The first set ended 25-22 for the Corsairs.
The Corsairs were in fine form for the second set, grabbing the lead and then pummeling the Owls, 25-12.
The Owls improved their tactics in the third set. Their 11 kills almost matched the Corsairs' 12. The home team kept a lead for the entire set, and it seemed perilous for the visitors when they were down 20-16, but the Owls mustered a few more kills and put up a fight. It was not enough, and the Corsairs again won 25-22.
The Corsairs next play a highly anticipated match against the College of the Canyons Cougars. Last year, the Cougars were one of two conference teams to beat the Corsairs, and they did it twice. However, this year, the Cougars’ performance has been inconsistent, giving the red-hot Corsairs a shot at doling out some payback, who are riding a six-game win-streak going into the rematch.
