Lady Corsairs lose tough match 2-1

The Santa Monica College women’s soccer team fell a step behind San Bernadino Valley College last Friday with a final score of 2-1. With 30 seconds left in the match, sophomore forward Olivia Patterson had one last shot on goal but it was deflected, thus sealing the victory for SBVC.

The first goal was scored by SBVC with two minutes remaining in the first half. Corsair goalie, Alisa Sheldon, had more than five saves in the first half, but this shot was just out of her reach.

The Corsairs had nearly 10 attempted shots offensively in the first half. Patterson and freshman midfielder Desire Kober played well together around the net, setting up a few “give and go’s”.

Vianca Barajas played well defensively, stopping multiple goal opportunities by SBVC. Despite the loss Barajas said, “It was one of our best games. In practice leading up to this game, we worked especially on ball winning. Coach had us playing against guys yesterday in practice, and I think our efforts and hard work showed today on the field.”

The Corsairs single goal came in the second half with 27 minutes left on the clock. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Barrington brought the ball up the left side and scored the equalizer.

There were only 14 minutes left in the match when SBVC sophomore defender, Breanne Dominguez, scored the game-winning goal off a free kick.

“For our next game to be successful we need to improve our defensive execution especially,” said Corsair’s head coach Aaron Benditson. “Offensively we must be taking opportunities near the opponent’s goal and converting it to score.”
