SMC Students Faced With Information Leak

A student information breach occurred at Santa Monica College (SMC) on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020. The Latino Center sent an email out to 321 students in the Adelante Program to promote an upcoming Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) workshop; however, a document was mistakenly attached that contained the personal contact information of over 300 students including their names, home addresses, and SMC student identification numbers.

Associated Students pass resolution “in solidarity” with Jewish students after criticism

The board members of Associated Students (AS) unanimously approved and sponsored the “Expressing Solidarity for Jewish Students at Santa Monica College” resolution at their Zoom-hosted board meeting on Monday. This approval comes after a week’s worth of impassioned criticism and support of the resolution from Santa Monica College (SMC) students and members of the public.

2020 Associated Students Election Results

The results for the 2020 Associated Students (A.S.) election were posted at 12 PM on Wednesday, March 27 on the A.S. Election page on the Santa Monica College website. There is yet to be an official announcement from the A.S. board.

The total voter turnout was 490 students. There was a 79% drop in voter turnout from the 2019 election cycle, in which there were 2,327 total votes.

A.S. Seeking Student Input for Cayton Center Update

The Cayton Center on the main campus of Santa Monica College (SMC) will be updated this semester with a $12,000 budget with the hopes of providing a better on campus experience for students.

SMC's Student Trustee Brooke Harrington is looking to SMC students first for ideas on possible new Cayton Center updates and uses, asking students for their suggestions on how the popular student lounge should be updated. Harrington has asked students to write down their needs on post-it sticky notes and hang them on a poster in the Cayton Center designated for this activity.

A.S. Hosts First Town Hall Meeting

The Associated Students (AS) kick off the spring semester with a town hall meeting at Santa Monica College’s (SMC) Cayton Center, on Wednesday, February 27. The meeting was organized to help encourage students to voice any concern or opinions they may have about the campus. “I think it’s an inspiring idea really taking into consideration what students are feeling, the demands and the needs of the students.
